A masterstroke is one very clever action that works completely, and often comes as a surprise. A last change in a game that wins it, or a simple idea that fixes a messy problem, can be called a masterstroke. Stroke here means one move — like a stroke of a brush — not the illness in the brain. It is colourful praise, the kind you read in newspapers. People use it after the move has already succeeded. If you call your own plan a masterstroke before it works, it can sound as if you are showing off.
