A mastectomy is an operation in which a doctor removes a breast. It is most often done because of breast cancer, to take the cancer away and to lower the chance that it will come back. Sometimes the whole breast is removed, and sometimes only part of it. This is a hospital word, used by doctors and by people talking about treatment. It is serious. You should not use it as a joke. After the operation, some people choose to have a new breast shape made, and some people do not. Both choices are normal.
