A Maronite is a Christian person, most often from Lebanon or with family from there. Maronites belong to an Eastern church that is joined with the Roman Catholic Church — so they are Catholic, though actually their prayers, history, and some church customs are their own, not a simple copy of a church in Rome. You will meet the word in news about Lebanon, and in history. It names a church community and a people, not a country on the map.
