A manhunt is an organised search for a person — most often someone the police think has committed a crime, or a prisoner who has escaped. Many officers may join in, sometimes with dogs, cars, checkpoints, and helicopters. News headlines like the word because it sounds urgent and big. Though actually, people also stretch it in a lighter way (a “manhunt” for a new boss), and the person need not be a man: here man again means a person. It belongs more to newspaper and police language than to quiet everyday talk.
