Manganese is a grey-white metal. On its own it breaks more easily than iron, so you almost never see a tool made of pure manganese. Its real job is inside other materials. add it to steel to make the steel stronger and less likely to crack. It is also used in some kinds of glass and in some batteries. It is a chemical element. The symbol is Mn. You meet the word in science class, in factory and mining news, and on the periodic table. It is a technical word, not one you need for everyday chat.

組成English took it from French manganèse, from Italian manganese, an altered form of Latin magnesia, from Ancient Greek magnēsía, after Magnesia, a place in Greece. That same place-name also lies behind magnesia, magnesium, and, further on, magnet — which is why the names look so alike.
