    A Malian is a person from Mali, the large West African country whose capital is and whose north runs into the . You also use Malian as an adjective: Malian music, a Malian city, Malian food. The country itself is Mali; the people and the things from there are Malian. Though actually, English does this with many country names (Italy → Italian, Ghana → Ghanaian), and the ending is just -an here, not an extra i. It is a neutral, ordinary word — news, passports, classrooms — not slang and not rude.
