Mali is a large country in West Africa. Much of the north is desert; further south there are rivers, towns, and . The capital is . The old city of is in Mali — many people far away know that name even if they have never been there. English speakers usually say MAH-lee. Though actually, another African country, , looks similar on the page; Mali is in the west, is not. Somalia is on the other side of the continent, so Mali and Somali are easy to mix up but they are not the same place. The country took its name from the old Mali Empire.
