A malevolent person wants to harm other people. The word is an adjective: a malevolent smile, a malevolent neighbour, a malevolent plan. It is stronger than , and colder than angry. can be careless; malevolent means the harm is wanted. You will find it in books, news, and careful speech; in chat, people more often say nasty, cruel, or they have it in for me. Though actually, it is also used for looks and objects in stories — a malevolent spirit, a malevolent machine — as if the thing itself wished you ill. That is story language, but it is common.
