Malaysia is a country in southeast Asia made of thirteen states. Eleven of them sit on the long peninsula people once called . The other two, and , sit on the island of , beside Indonesia and . People name Kuala Lumpur as the capital; though actually the government offices are in a newer planned city nearby called Putrajaya, and Kuala Lumpur is still the city everyone means. An older count (2014) put the population at about thirty million; there are more people now. English is widely used, a leftover of British rule, and Malaysia belongs to the Commonwealth. The country has long been known for rubber, and it also makes clothes, cars, and electrical goods. The name was built as land of the Malays by British map-makers in the 1800s. A popular story says someone added letters to for Singapore, , and North () — that is a folk story, not how the name was made. Singapore was in Malaysia for a short time and then left; and stayed.
組成From Malay + -sia (another form of the place-ending -ia), coined by British geographers in the 19th century as a name for the Malay Archipelago; it can be translated as land of the Malays. A popular folk story holds that the country name was Malaya plus extra letters for Singapore, Sarawak, and North Borneo (Sabah) — that is not how the name was formed.
