    Malaya is an old name, not the name of the country on today's map. It once meant the Malay Peninsula — the long finger of land in southeast Asia — and later the country on most of that peninsula (the Federation of Malaya). In 1963 that country joined with others to form Malaysia, so Malaya now belongs to history books, old maps, and the names of groups started before that change. The same land is now usually called Malaysia or West Malaysia. If you say Malaya for the modern country, people may think you mean the past.
