    If something is make-or-break, it will either save you or finish you. There is no soft middle. A make-or-break exam, a make-or-break year, a make-or-break meeting: this is the one that decides whether you succeed or fail. People use it for work, sport, love, and money — anywhere the next step is heavy. It is informal but not slang; newspapers use it. You will almost always see it before a noun, with the holding the three pieces together. It pictures two old verbs at once: to make it (to succeed) and to break (to ruin).
