If something is make-or-break, it will either save you or finish you. There is no soft middle. A make-or-break exam, a make-or-break year, a make-or-break meeting: this is the one that decides whether you succeed or fail. People use it for work, sport, love, and money — anywhere the next step is heavy. It is informal but not slang; newspapers use it. You will almost always see it before a noun, with the holding the three pieces together. It pictures two old verbs at once: to make it (to succeed) and to break (to ruin).
make-or-break 用來形容一件會決定成敗的事，它要不就成就你，要不就毀掉你，中間沒有緩衝。通常放在名詞前，像「a make-or-break ＿＿」，例如 exam、year 或 meeting，可用在工作、運動、感情或金錢上。語氣偏非正式，但報紙也常用。它的字面畫面來自兩個動詞：make it 的成功，和 break 的毀壞。
