Majorca is a Spanish island in the western Mediterranean, the largest of the Balearic Islands. English has long used the spelling Majorca; Spanish and Catalan use Mallorca, and many English speakers now write that too — it is the same island, not two places. In Britain it is famous as a cheap-holiday island: sun, beaches, and package hotels. That picture is only half true. Parts of the south and the party towns were built very fast for tourists, and some British people say those bits have been spoiled — too many bars, too many new blocks. Inland and in the north there are quiet hills, farms, and old stone towns, and that is the Majorca many Spanish families know. Tourists still go in huge numbers in summer.
