In school language, mainstreaming is putting a child who has a physical disability, a learning difficulty, or another special need into an ordinary class, instead of sending that child only to a separate special school. The hope is that the child belongs with everyone else, and the class should change a little so that child can join in — though actually this only works if the school gives the teacher extra help; otherwise the child can sit in the room and still be left out. The word is the -ing form of the verb to mainstream, and it is also used as a noun for the policy itself. People stretch it outside schools too: mainstreaming an idea means bringing it into ordinary life so it is no longer rare or special. Newer education writing often prefers inclusion, because mainstream can make the ordinary class sound like the only real stream.
