One way to hold these three words: an woman standing closest to the most important woman in the room. The words say it themselves — maid is an woman, and of honour marks the place as a privileged one rather than ordinary service. At court, the woman in the middle is a queen or princess and the attendant follows her through the day. At a wedding, the woman in the middle is the bride, and the day belongs to her in the same way. The same picture fits both: the first position beside someone whose day, or whose court, everything turns around.
