    In computing, a macro is a saved set of steps the computer can run as one command. You record or write it once — open this, copy that, paste here — and then fire the whole chain with a key or a click. users meet macros a lot; so do people who type the same thing all day. The name comes from Greek makrós, “long”: a macro is a long instruction packed into one short name (it was once called a macroinstruction). Though actually, people stretch it a little. Any shortcut that plays back a chain of actions may get called a macro, even if it is not a full program. Informal-to-technical. You will also see the prefix macro- on other words meaning “large,” but this entry is the computer shortcut.
