- 1澳門（英文舊拼 Macao，今多作 Macau，同一地方）
A small coastal area in southeast China, near Hong Kong. Portugal ran it for a long time; in 1999 it was handed back to China. It is part of China, but it still has its own money, its own border checks, and many of its own laws for a set number of years. People call that arrangement “one country, two systems,” the same idea used for Hong Kong. Tourists go for old Portuguese streets, mixed Chinese–Portuguese food, and especially casinos — gambling is a huge business there. The main city has the same name. Though actually, English spelling is messy: older books and some official papers write Macao; most travel English now Macau. Same place, not two cities.
組成English took the name from Portuguese Macao / Macau, the Portuguese writing of Chinese 澳門.
