A large, coloured bird of the parrot family, with a long tail and a huge strong for cracking nuts. The feathers can be red, blue, yellow, green — often in loud mixes. People often add a colour, like scarlet macaw or blue-and-gold macaw. You meet the word in zoos, wildlife films, and jungle pictures. It is a nature word, not slang. Though actually, a macaw is a kind of parrot, but not every parrot is a macaw: a budgie is a parrot too, just small and different. These birds live in Central and South America in the wild.
