Luxembourg is a small country in western Europe, tucked between Belgium, Germany, and France. Its official name is the Grand of Luxembourg — a is a land once ruled by a duke, and Luxembourg still has a grand duke as head of state, which is unusual in Europe today. The capital is also called Luxembourg (Luxembourg-Ville). About half a million people live in the whole country, so it is tiny on the map, but it is not .
It is a member of the European Union, and several EU offices sit there. The EU’s main law court, the European Court of Justice, is in Luxembourg. People there use Luxembourgish, French, and German; many also use English for work. The country is known for banking and for being one of the richer places in Europe. Though actually, when English speakers say “Luxembourg,” they may mean the country or the capital city — the same name does both jobs — so you often need the rest of the sentence to see which one.
組成From older German names (Luccelemburc, Lucilinburhuc): luzil “little” + burg “castle.” So the name is built like “little castle.”
