A lutenist is a person who plays the lute — the musician, not the instrument. You will meet the word in concert notes and history books more than in daily talk. It is a quiet specialist label, like or violinist, built for that one old instrument. If a line ever seems to call the lutenist the guitar-like thing itself, that is a mix-up with lute; this word is always the player.
