1. 1

A lute is an old musical instrument, a bit like a guitar, with a round, bowl-shaped back and a neck that often bends back at the top. You play it with your fingers or with a small pick. People in Europe loved it hundreds of years ago, in palaces and ordinary homes; you still hear it in early-music concerts. It is not the Chinese pipa, though they belong to the same wide family of pear-shaped string instruments. The English name came through French from Arabic al-ʿūd, “the wood” — the same root as the oud still played in the Middle East.
