Lurex is a brand that became a kind of stuff: a very thin thread made to look like metal, usually gold or silver, and woven into cloth so the fabric sparkles. The cloth is still cloth. It is not real gold mixed in. You see it in party clothes, stage costumes, and knitted jumpers that catch the light. People say the name the way they say other fabric names, often without thinking it started as a trademark. Clothes described as Lurex can look festive, or a bit loud, depending on the time and the taste. It belongs to fashion and crafts, not to science. The name was coined for the market from lure plus a stylish ending -ex.
