1. 1

A lumpectomy is an operation to take out a lump from the body, most often a from a woman's breast. The aim is to take the bad lump and a little of the tissue around it, and leave the rest of the breast. That is why people set it next to a mastectomy, which takes the whole breast. It is a hospital word, used by doctors and in news about cancer; you would not use it for taking a splinter out of a finger. Though actually, 'lump' here is the everyday word for what the doctor may call a or a mass — the surgery is named from the simple word, not the Latin one. Men can have a lumpectomy too, but the word is heard most in talk about breast cancer. After the operation, many people still need other treatment; the lumpectomy is the cutting-out step, not the whole story.
