A lumberman is someone in the business of cutting large areas of forest and selling the wood. Compared with lumberjack, this word leans toward the trade — the industry person — not only the worker with the axe. A lumberman may be a cutter, a mill owner, or a dealer. The word is mainly North American, and it is less common in everyday talk than lumberjack; you meet it more in older writing and in the history of the timber trade. In careful use, if you only mean the person who fells the tree, lumberjack or is clearer.
