Lugubrious means looking or sounding very sad and serious, as if you were in mourning — a long face, a slow heavy voice, a dark mood. It is a , grown-up word: novels, reviews, and slightly comic descriptions use it more than street talk. Though actually, people often use it with a little smile. The gloom is so extra, so theatrical, that it becomes funny: a lugubrious butler, a lugubrious song about burnt toast. It is about the manner, the show of sadness, not a doctor's word for depression. Stronger and odder than just 'sad'.
