Lowlands are stretches of land that sit lower than the country around them — often flatter ground with rivers and farms. People use the plural when they mean that kind of country as a whole: the lowlands along the coast. With a capital L, the Lowlands is also a place name: the lower part of Scotland, so called because it sits lower than the Highlands. That second use brings in people, history, and the way people speak, not only height on a map. In everyday talk without Scotland in mind, lowlands just means low country.
