    Something low-maintenance does not need a lot of care. A low-maintenance plant is happy if you water it now and then. Short hair can be low-maintenance. A machine that rarely breaks is low-maintenance. People also use it of people and love: a low-maintenance friend does not need constant messages and drama. That people-sense is informal, and it can sound a little cold if you say it to someone’s face — as if they were a plant. A book of American slang says this people-meaning became popular after the 1989 film When Harry Met Sally. With things, it is usually a compliment: not much work.
