Lovemaking is a gentle, slightly old word for sex — two people having sex, and sometimes the kissing and touching around it. You will meet it in novels, in films, and in polite talk more than in the playground. Young people more often say “having sex” or “sleeping together.” Lovemaking can make the act sound caring, not only physical. It is not a dirty joke word, and it is not a medical word. Though actually, a long time ago the same word could also mean courting — trying to win someone’s love, without sex. If you meet it in a very old book, check the time. In almost every new sentence, it means sex.
