If you are lovelorn, you love someone and they do not love you back — or they have gone — and you carry that hole around with you. You think of them too much. You may look a little lost. Poems, old films, and newspapers like this word. People still use it, but it sounds a little like a story, not like a doctor’s note. A teenager can be lovelorn. So can a grown person. It is not the same as being angry after a fight, and it is not the same as simply “sad.” The love is still there, and it has nowhere to go. Though actually, the second half, lorn, is an old piece meaning “lost” or “left behind,” so the whole word is almost “lost in love.”
