Louisville is a city in Kentucky, in the north of the state, on the Ohio River. Each year it holds the Kentucky Derby, a famous horse race that many Americans watch. Fort Knox, where the US government keeps a huge store of gold, is not in the city itself but not far away. The name is Louis + -ville and was given for King Louis XVI of France; -ville is a French ending meaning town. Though actually, locals often swallow the name, so it can sound softer than “LOO-ee-ville” in careful speech. mix it up with Louisiana, which is a southern US state, not this city. Louisville is a place you fly to or drive through; Louisiana is a whole state on the map.
