Louisiana is a state in the southern United States. Its largest city is New Orleans, famous for music, food, and a strong French past. The Mississippi River spreads out there into wet, low land before it meets the sea. The name came from French Louisiane and was given for King Louis XIV of France. Though actually, two easy mix-ups wait for . First, New Orleans is the famous city, but it is not the state capital — that is Baton Rouge. Second, Louisiana is a state; Louisville is a city in Kentucky. They share a French royal name, not a place. People in the US just say the state name in ordinary talk, as they would say Texas or Florida.
