In Ireland, a lough is a lake, or a part of the sea with land almost all around it. You meet the word mainly in place names: a lake inland, or a long arm of the sea. Scottish English has the same kind of word, spelled loch. Though actually, you do not use lough for a lake in England or the United States — there people just say lake. It is Irish English, and it is not pronounced like “how” or like laugh. It sounds like “lock”, sometimes with a little breath at the end, as in loch. On a map it tells you the water is part of Irish geography, not a special scientific type of lake.

組成Borrowed from Irish loch (from Old Irish loch), from an old Celtic word for a lake or pool. Doublet of loch (and, further back, of lay and the place-name Looe). A second line in English comes from Middle English lough, from a related Brythonic word for the same kind of water.
