In Scotland, a loch is a lake — a stretch of water with land around it. Scottish people almost never say lake for those places; they keep this old word. Loch Ness and Loch Lomond are the ones English meet first. Though actually, not every loch is a quiet freshwater lake in the hills. Some lochs are arms of the sea, with salt water, only partly shut in by land — more like a long bay. Speakers outside Scotland still say loch when they mean those Scottish places; they do not use it for a lake in another country. In writing it stays loch, not lock, and the ch is the Scottish sound, not the ch in chair.
