If something is long-running, it has been going on for a long time — and quite often it is still going. A long-running television show is one that has been on year after year, not a series that lasted one season. News writers like the word for things that will not end: a long-running dispute, a long-running court case, a long-running investigation. The picture is of something in motion that has kept moving across months or years, not of something that merely sat there. That is why we say a long-running programme or a long-running battle more readily than a long-running person. A person is not usually long-running; a show, a conflict, or a campaign is. It sounds a little more formal than just very long, and you will meet it a lot in newspapers. A show that has already finished can still be called long-running if it ran for years while it was on.
long-running 指某件事已經持續很久，而且常常還在繼續。新聞常用在不會結束的事上，寫成「a long-running ＿＿」，例如「a long-running dispute」（長期爭議）、「a long-running court case」（長期官司）、「a long-running investigation」（長期調查）。它的畫面是事情一直在動，跨過好幾個月或好幾年，而不是靜止在那裡。
