Logging is the work of cutting down trees in a forest and taking the wood away. It is an industry word: a logging company, a logging town, a ban on logging. In a news story it can sound like a job; in an environment story it can sound like damage to a forest — same work, different feeling, depending on who is talking. It is the activity built from log: making logs from standing trees. This is not “logging in” to a website, and it is not a computer writing a record of what it did, though English uses logging for that too.
