Lofty most often describes something very high up, like lofty mountains or a lofty ceiling. From there it stretched to describe ideas or goals that are grand and - 'lofty ambitions', 'lofty ideals'. But it can also turn negative: someone with a 'lofty' manner acts as if they are better or more important than other people, a bit distant and proud. Context tells you which flavor is meant.
