A locale is the place where something happens. In a book or a film, it is the setting: the town, the island, the street where the story takes place. People also use it for real life — the locale of a meeting, a crime, a festival. It feels a little more formal than place. Though actually, it does not have to be famous or pretty; it is simply where the action sits. Film people care a lot about locale, because the look of the place does half the storytelling. You may also meet the word in computers, where a locale is the language-and-region setting (for example, Chinese as used in Taiwan). That is a later, technical use of the same idea: whose place’s rules are we following?
