Lo-fi recordings sound unclear, thin, or rough, often with extra noises — , hum, room sound, a cheap microphone, tape . The name is short for low fidelity: the recording does not stay close to the clean, full sound you would hear in the room (that clean ideal is hi-fi, high fidelity). In older technical talk, lo-fi was a fault: a bad radio, a fuzzy cassette. Though actually, many musicians now choose that rough sound on purpose. Bedroom albums, some hip-hop, and a whole ‘lo-fi’ playlist style treat the and the softness as a mood, warm and homemade, not as a mistake. So the same word can be a complaint (‘this file is too lo-fi to use’) or a compliment (‘I love how lo-fi this track is’). It is informal, used by people who talk about music, podcasts, and gear. As a noun, lo-fi can mean that style of music. It is not a word for ‘low five’ or for Wi-Fi.
