An LLM is a university degree in law that you take after your first degree. It is a master’s: you already have something like an LLB (or another first degree that the university accepts), and then you study law at a higher, often more specialised, level — tax law, human rights, shipping, and so on. People say ‘do an LLM’ or ‘an LLM in international law’. It is formal and academic, used on CVs and university pages. Though actually, it is not the only way the letters LLM appear in English now. From about the 2020s, the same three letters are also the everyday short name for a large language model (a kind of AI). In a law school, LLM still means the law master’s; in a tech office, it almost never does. The law sense is older in universities. Length and entry rules differ by country: some LLM courses last a year, some longer; some are taught, some are more research. It does not by itself make you a solicitor or barrister. It shows extra study after the first law (or other) degree.
