A litigant is a person whose name is on a court case. They may be the one making the claim — ‘you harmed me, so I want the court to help’ — or the one who has to answer that claim. Their lawyer speaks for them, but the litigant is the person the fight is actually about. It is a formal word from news and legal papers, not from chat with friends. Though actually, everyday English usually splits the idea: people say the person suing or the person being sued. Litigant is useful because it covers both sides at once. You can also meet it as an adjective (a litigant party), but that is the same idea: involved in the court fight, not merely watching it.

組成From French litigant, from Middle French, from Latin litigans — ‘the one who is carrying on a lawsuit’. Latin lis (stem lit-) meant a lawsuit.
