Lithuanian belongs to Lithuania, the Baltic country between and Poland whose capital is . As an adjective it means “of that country”: Lithuanian food, a Lithuanian passport, Lithuanian history. As a noun it has two common jobs. “A Lithuanian” is a person from Lithuania. “Lithuanian” is also the language — a Baltic language, not Russian, not Polish, and not the same as , even though those places are next door. Linguists pay extra attention to it because it has kept some very old features of the Indo-European family. For students, the spelling trap is the usual one: the country is Lithuania; the person, the language, and the adjective are Lithuanian.
