Lithuania is a country in northeast Europe, on the Baltic Sea. lies to its north, Poland to its south, and to its east. The capital is . It is one of the three Baltic countries, together with and — English speakers mix those three up all the time. Lithuania is the southern one of the three. In the twentieth century it was taken into the Soviet Union; it broke away in 1990–1991 and joined the European Union in 2004. The people and the language are called , not Lithuania. It is a small country beside its big neighbours, but it has its own language, history, and flag, and it is not part of Russia today.
組成From Medieval Latin Līthuānia, from an older Slavic form *Litъva, from Old Lithuanian Lietuva — the name the people used. An older English name, Lettow, is related. Some people have guessed the name comes from a small river called the Lietauka, but archaeological evidence does not support that guess, so it remains only a maybe.
