A liqueur is a sweet, strong alcoholic drink, usually with fruit, nuts, herbs, coffee, or cream, and drunk in small glasses after a meal rather than with it. Baileys, Kahlúa, Cointreau, Amaretto, limoncello — those are liqueurs. It is a countable noun ('we tried three liqueurs'), and also used for the substance ('a chocolate with liqueur inside'). Two things make it a liqueur rather than just spirits: it is sweetened, and it is . Whisky, vodka, and gin are strong but not sweet, so they are spirits, not liqueurs. And because a liqueur is sweet, people sip it slowly in a tiny glass, or pour a little over ice cream, or put it in coffee and in cakes. The pronunciation is the hard part. British speakers say it roughly 'li-KYOOR'; Americans more often say 'li-KUR'. Either way the stress is on the second half, and it does NOT sound like 'liquor'.
