Liquefaction is the noun for something turning into a liquid, or being turned into one — the change itself, not the result. It is a technical word from science and engineering; in ordinary talk you would say 'melting' or 'it turned to liquid'. Two places you will actually meet it. In chemistry and industry: the liquefaction of natural gas, where gas is cooled and squeezed until it becomes liquid so it can be shipped (that is what LNG means — liquefied natural gas). And in earthquakes, which matters in Taiwan: soil liquefaction is when wet sandy ground is shaken so hard that it stops behaving like solid ground and starts behaving like thick liquid, so buildings tilt and sink into it. news reports use this word every time there is a big quake near soft ground. Note that liquefaction is not the same as melting. Melting needs heat. Liquefaction is the general word for becoming liquid by any means — by cooling and pressing a gas, by shaking wet soil, by chemicals breaking something down. Melting is one way in; liquefaction is the whole doorway.
