    Linseed is the seed of the flax plant. People crush it for oil — used in paints and wood finish, and also eaten. In food shops you often see flaxseed; in painting, woodwork, and older English you see linseed. Same seed. The seeds are small, brown, and shiny. Linseed oil goes sticky as it dries in the air, which is why painters and furniture people use it. The word is ordinary in farming, art shops, and health-food labels — not fancy, not slang.
