A linnet is a small brown singing bird. The male can show a wash of red on the chest in the breeding season; the song is thin and sweet. It lives in open country, hedges, and in Europe and nearby lands — not a bird most students in Taiwan will see in the park. The name is a little old and literary now; birdwatchers still use it, and it turns up in poems and British nature writing. It was named for flax: the bird is fond of flax seeds, the same plant that gives us linen.

組成From Old French linette, from lin (“flax”), because the bird likes flax seeds. English also had Old English līnete / līnetwige, which became dialect lintwhite. Lin- here is flax, the source of linen.
