About language: the sounds, words, and grammar people use, or the scientific study of those things. A linguistic difference is a difference in how people speak. Linguistic skills are language skills, though actually textbooks like this word more than everyday talk does — at the dinner table people just say language. You meet it in school, university, and serious articles. It is the adjective that sits beside linguistics (the study) and linguist (the person). It goes back to Latin lingua, “tongue” and also “language.” It is not a comment on whether someone speaks well or sounds fancy; it only means “to do with language.”
