A kind of Italian pasta: long, thin, and flat, like a narrow ribbon. Spaghetti is round; linguini is flat, and a little wider than spaghetti but narrower than fettuccine. You will also see linguine, which is the usual Italian spelling; linguini is the common American spelling of the same food. In restaurants it often comes with seafood or a light sauce. It is just the name of the dish — not formal, not technical. The Italian name is “little tongues,” from the shape.
