Limoges is a city in west-central France. For a long time it has been famous for fine porcelain: delicate cups, plates and vases with a smooth white body, often beautifully painted. In English, people sometimes say Limoges when they mean that china, not only the city itself. The name is French. Further back it comes from Latin Lemovices, the name of a Gaulish tribe in that part of France, most likely a nod to their elm bows and spears. You do not say it like “lime” plus “oges”; it follows the French name, with a soft ending, roughly li-MOHZH.
