An elm is a large, broad-leaved tree, and also the wood from that tree. The leaves are often a little rough, with uneven bases, and the tree can grow very tall. It was once a common street and countryside tree in Britain, Europe, and North America. Though actually, for many English speakers now the word arrives with a sad story: Dutch elm disease killed huge numbers of elms in the twentieth century, so a city that was full of them may have almost none left. The wood is tough and was used for things that had to take a knock, like wheels and chairs. It is an ordinary nature word, more at home in the countryside or in older writing than in a Taiwan city conversation, where you are likelier to meet 榆樹 in a book than on the next street.
