A lightship is a ship that does the job of a lighthouse where you cannot easily build a tower — on a sandbank, in a shifting channel, in water too deep or too soft for stone. It stays near the dangerous place and shows a powerful flashing light so other ships do not run aground. The crew used to live on board, rolling with the sea. There are far fewer now; buoys and GPS took a lot of the work. Dutch has a twin, lichtschip, built from the same two pieces.
